      The record industry's traditional year-end onslaught has, this time around, produced a glut of "Best of" and "Greatest hits" collections, ranging from the sublime to the merely bland to the totally ridiculous.  Few of the compilations work in the true spirit of "best of" collections, which were originally developed to pull together songs by groups who thrived in the singles market....Some of the "Best of" releases seem earmarked for cultists rather than the masses, including such oddities as Leo Kottke's 1971-1976 (Did You Hear Me?)
