Concert Performances: Austin City Limits, Show #1 |
[Leo plays "Airproofing II"]
[Applause]
LEO:I'm never quite sure what to do with -- I mean I've been doing this for many years and I haven't really figured out what to do with my legs yet.
This was also written in Mexico. Outside of Cuernavaca, there's a town called Taxco [pronounced "TAS-koh"] and it's more or less on top of a [audience member says something] -- which? -- it's on top of a mountain, many steps, if you want to be cool, to get there. And I've walked these steps. And when I got there -- this was on a weekend -- I entered the city square and fell asleep, as a result of this walk, on a park bench. And I was awakened, I don't know how much time had elapsed, but I was awakened by a little boy who was beating me in the face with a rolled-up newspaper. He was a totally corrupted evil child and he was delighted with himself. He was one of the happiest people I've seen in a while. So naturally I burst into song and this is called "Taxco Steps."
[Leo plays "Taxco Steps"]
[Applause]
LEO:
I've played guitar for about 31 or 32 years now and singing was something that I discovered a little later on. And it took me a long time to find out what I was doing or what I wanted to do. There's still a lot of, a lot of things I could learn, so I -- now what am I trying to say? I'm trying to say that I know my singing drives some people right up the wall. It doesn't drive me up the wall, so suffer.
But I like to sing and of course there are a couple of people I'd like to sing like. I'd like to introduce Curb Records recording artist -- how's that? -- my friend, Lyle Lovett.
[Applause]
[Lyle Lovett walks on stage with his guitar and sits beside Leo]
LYLE:
This is really a great honor for me. I met Leo a couple of years ago when I opened for him at Pordair's [?] pub up at Dallas before I ever had a record out and I was just sort of the local opening act. And we got to -- John Haig [?] and I did a show, oh, a couple of months ago now, up in St. Pauls at the World Theater and Leo was nice enough to come in and played a few songs with us and it was really the thrill of my life. And to get to do this on Austin City Limits is even a bigger thrill. So thank you.
[Lyle plays "You Can't Resist It" and Leo accompanies him on guitar]
Lyrics to "You Can't Resist It"
She was old enough to know better
And she was strong enough to be true
And she was hard enough to know whether
He was smart enough to know what to do
CHORUS:
And you can't resist it when it happens to you
No you can't resist it when it happens to you
And you can tell your stories
And you can swear it's true
But you can save your lying
For some other fool
(Repeat chorus)
Yes, she was old eough to know better
And she was strong enough to be true
And she was hard enough to know whether
And he was smart enough to know what to do.
(Repeat chorus twice)[Applause]
LYLE:
Thank you, Leo, thank you very much. [walks off stage]
[Leo gets his 12-string]
LEO:
I won't lie. I've been having a terrible feud with the 12-string for the last couple of years. [Tuning] This is one of the reasons why. Then I found this guitar [starts playing opening riff from "Julie's House]. Tends to play in tune. It sounds nice.
[Leo plays "Julie's House"]
Lyrics to "Julie's House:"
I climbed the hill to Julie's house
The place I used to live
I climbed the steps and tried the door
And let myself in.
The kitchen clock I used to watch
Had stopped at five to five
A photograph I'd never seen
A car came up the drive
I stood outside the kitchen door
And when she turned her head
I said that I was back to stay
She laughed at what I said
She said that I'd grow old believing
That I was what mattered most
That I'd uncover real feelings
As I got close
I climbed the hill to Julie's house
The place I used to live
I climbed the steps and tried the door
And let myself in.
She said that I'd grow old believing
That I was what mattered most
That I'd uncover real feelings
As I got close.
