ARCHIVED GUESTBOOK ENTRIES (SEPT 1998 - SEPT 2003)
We're not sure why we're archiving these guestbook entries. Perhaps for some future society whose scientists will want to dissect the phenomenon known as the "Tab Pigs".
For 38 years I've resisted anyone showing me how to figure out LK's music.
Did it all on my own, thank you very much. However, with age comes wisdom and the realization that I've got a lot of them wrong. (Make enough noise, along with a good imagination, and you hear what you want.)So,thanks for the roadmap.Colin Bennitt

its not very often that something takes me to the nth of my degree. what a divine pleasure to watch someone simply embodying who they are.
gewergevebiet... that rare occasion when every nuance of all the subtle improvisations that surfaced in this performance in time all fell together as they revealed themselves. synchronistic syntax... an exquisite fractal dance. how incredibly beautifull to watch and how satisfying it must have been to play.
te veo... this rendition superceded the arena of performance. any veneer had melted away to reveal an emotinal plasmasphere...like a pause in a conversation, a momentary private pause, introspection to the core.when he finished playing it felt inappropriate to clap and so i didn't untill i became self concious. part of me is still sitting there untill i figure out what it was... perhaps only to realize that we are meant to stop occasionally in this world... and feel at home. regards nannancy

sorry to horn in here again, but i forgot to mention that during the concert leo mentioned that the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet would like to do a version of "Gewergevebeit" and I seem to recall someone on here saying they had it tabbed.Leo said that he hadnt had a chance to send it off.
And the other thing I wanted to ask was about this guitar leo was playing.it was this twelve fret.It had a slotted headstock and looked like it had a martin decal on it...does anybody know of this guitar. It sounded great, very small ,he's very comfortable with it...sometimes i think he's kind of embarrassed by it's size or something.it does look kinda like a ukelalee on him...he always has to say something about how he can't get down to the 14th fret.
so, that's all, i hope someone can help out and get the tab and the tune to the L.A. dudes.
peace out, y'all!

saw leo the other night in a tiny stuffy theatre on vashon island in washington state..man,what a crab.did he complain about the heat, and was he feeling it that night ?Yup..poor old leo...he loves his job .it's just all those annoying noisy fans that can make it suck sometimes...we rose to our feet as soon as he walked on stage, giving him a standing o before he had even strummed a note. do you think this woulda impressed leo? nope...he scowled at us,yes read scowl, big huge crabby scowl, and the "whats all the noise about?" face... "the guitars are curling up here" he said complaining about the heat..they opened the side doors ,one front row fan even got up and gave him a bottle of water...somewhere in those concerts you get the distinct feeling that leo cant wait to get off stage...the bow at the end of the concert was profound, quick and the encore of jack fig ,had no thrills and trills to it...one imagines that leo woke up in minnesota that day and had supper in washington..and that is too far..for any man who wants to play faculties intact...
more stuff on the NOGUITARSNOVOCALS LEOKOTTKE FANSITE that i tried to start up...but noone seems to be able to find...thanks for readinggina

Gina,
No self-respecting Pig would give a rats-ass about his hair and teeth.
We have noticed, however, that LK is a potential candidate for the GF, but definitely not a user as of our last sighting.
You wrote: "but actually he does sound like that outside jazz stuff i listened to in the eighties....when i saw him this spring he did this improve thing in the middle of "living in the country" you had to be there..he was going way out of the parameters you normally describe for a down home folky quasi hymn type tune like that one...it was full of these flash chord changes that he'd stuff these really tight dry strums, muting the strings, in the middle...very weird, very dramatic very dark..."
Now THIS is interesting. Two of the Pigs attended a concert this spring and observed the same thing, in fact we discussed it with him afterwards. It was an interesting conversation. I wish I could recall more of the details......
Hoink? Can you add anything?

i love talking about leo's hair.it's just about all i think of all day..how can you not? and ,dont give me that crap, dude totally loves that grecian formula, he prolly drinks it at breakfast...
what about the other stuff i said like how he sounds like cecil taylor or late miles...he does...it's like penderecki meets eddie son house jr...serious!
then there's leo's teeth..they're so little! and his head is so big! he looks like a calcium deficient shark up there sometimes when he smiles..i kid you not!
but actually he does sound like that outside jazz stuff i listened to in the eighties....when i saw him this spring he did this improve thing in the middle of "living in the country" you had to be there..he was going way out of the parameters you normally describe for a down home folky quasi hymn type tune like that one...it was full of these flash chord changes that he'd stuff these really tight dry strums, muting the strings, in the middle...very weird, very dramatic very dark...
i wonder if this is a new direction he's taking, and if he is ,is it interesting? nope! not as half as interesting as his hair, thats for sure!gina

Gina, lighten up on Leo, I don’t think he’s the type that’s going to use Grecian formula (not unless his image consultant thought it up); maybe you have him confused with some other aging person in your life? Also while I have your attention, who cares if he does, we all do things at different periods of our lives. Have you ever did anything radical with yourself? I know I have. Anyways... Leo is one of the best composers of our times and I’m glad that he’s generous enough to do the many concerts he does each year.
Since we’ve digressed to talking about Leo’s hair, here’s my account of one of his stories told at a concert in Ann Arbor, Michigan, about 2 years ago. He was at the beginning of the concert, maybe after a few songs, when he starting talking about his hair cut. You could tell he was not comfortable with his new look. He said he couldn’t figure out what exactly it was that he didn’t like about the haircut until before that concert. He went on to say that he was in his hotel room before the concert watching the movie “Dumb and Dumber” when it occurred to him why he didn’t like the hair cut. He said something like, “I looked like one of those two guys before I got this hair cut and the other one afterwards.”Robert

Bob, you're right. There has been a dearth of new tab of late. Very few of us do any tabbing anymore, but a few still plug away at it now and then. Some is just a long time in posting. For example, I noticed we do not have "Tiny Island" on the site and that one's been done for some time. Meanwhile, as for new tab, I just finished Jib's Hat from Guitar Music, and Coach did "Gewerbegebiet" (as yet unreleased) and is working on "Disco" from the new CD. Also, Hey Suz has threatened to clean up "Night of the Hunter."

Just stopping in to post re solo Leo at the annual Thanksgiving concert.
Up: good, solid, complex playing and some improv.Solo, he's doing just one thing these days, and driving it - it's deep enough to carry a show. Accomplished singing - something he's been working onfor years, no doubt, getting away from the 12-string bray and finding his voice as a song singer. Usual relaxed and intelligent stage presence, usual "just got off a bus" disoriented aura. Although his main story was a rehash of the same one told the last two years, it worked - and i detect a purpose here: i think he wants the audience to hear the stories as performances themselves, semi-improv recitations of carefully worked material. Interesting.
Down: his habit of noodling between tunes, without getting anywhere or drawing a tune out of the half-licks, got away from him once or twice - tended to attenuate the tension. The sound was too "electronic" for my taste (caveat: my favorite sound of his career was that on Burnt Lips) and kind of vague in dynamics. And his accomplished singing was once again wasted on Ring Ring and such - there's stuff that cannot be rehabilitated by intelligence in performance, and that song needs shelving for a few years IMHO.
My general impression was that a lot of his creative side has been occupied by something else, such as the duo with Gordon, and the solo show suffered a bit in consequence. Glad i went, though.Jody

Concert update:
As usual, the concert was fantastic, as is any concert with Leo. Mike Gordon was actually really impressive as well, they sounded good together. It was also interesting to hear some of Leo's tunes with a bass line, like "william powell", "cripple creek", "living in the country", and "eight miles high". The only gripe I had was about the fans. There were a large amount of people there just to see Gordon (and you can tell the phish fans from the rest, baggy cakhis, green sweatshirts, and a knit hat, it was sort of funny) and they didnt have any idea of who leo was. I also felt left out when they did a Phish song (one I didnt know) and the whole crowd went crazy. Oh well, I could get used to seeing Gordon with Leo, but I still would like to see Leo next time by himself. Oh, one interesting tidbit about the guitars Leo was using- he had his usual LKSM-12 string, but his six was not a Taylor, I couldnt read the badge on it, but the entire guitar was carbon fiber! Pretty neat. He also didnt plug into the house system, he had soundhole pickups installed in both guitars and was plugging into a Fender Twin amp. Very interesting indeed.
Well, I've used enough space on the board for now, just thought I would provide some "field information" from our favorite artist.
Cheers all!

It's me again! Well, I broke down and got the new album. Lots of play by this Mike Gordon fellow. It's an interesting album, it's good to hear Leo playing some different things, but the more I hear it the more I feel a tad dissapointed. It seems there is more Gordon on this album than there is Kottke. I never got into Phish much, so maybe it's just me, but I would like to hear more Leo instead, like another "one guitar..." album. Oh well, good to hear anything new by Master Kottke. And I'm still looking forward to seeing him in concert on sunday. Any other thoughts on his new material?

Hello there, Pigs!
I've got a mission for you, if you choose to accept it.
Hopefully some of you have seen/heard by now the Taylor "Liberty Tree Guitar" video/DVD. (If not, GET IT!). The "Patriotic Medley" that Doyle Dykes plays is an incredible bit of arranging/picking (ie., normal for Doyle <g>).
Are any of you pigs up to the challange of tabbing this medley?
P.S. - extra credit will be given for tabbing the DVD bonus track - I believe it's "My Country 'Tis of Thee"

Aaron,
Disclaimer to all of the following:
This is all just my goofy opinion and none of this I know absolutely is right!
(You would have to go to the big guy himself to know for sure)
To answer your first question about the type of guitar in that show, I’m not sure but I believe that he was using an Olson guitar at that time. You can check on this by going to: http://www.olsonguitars.com/.
I think that Leo constantly attempts to find what works best for him whether it’s strings or the electronics.
I’ve even seen seen him use Taylor guitars with the factory electronics in concert. For sound hole pickups he uses either a Fishman or a Sunrise. As for as the amp, he uses whatever is in place at where he’s playing.
As far as the action on his instruments that’s a tough one. I was lucky enough to acquire a LKSM 12 string that he used as a replacement for the 12 string he was playing on tour (his was lost by the airlines for awhile) and it’s action is as lower then the standard setup that comes from the factory. I think for the 6 string he likes the action kinda high and uses light strings. On the 12 string I think he’s using 53 on the bottom end and 12’s on the high end and tunes it down lower. Also, he uses a wound string on the number 10 string instead of a plain steel like most 12 strings sets use. Try that, it will make a big difference. Again I’m pretty sure he try's alot of different combinations depending on the instrument. One of the things I remember reading is that he goes by what tension is going to work best on a particular instrument. About his picking technique, what I remember reading is that if he’s just striking the string he uses more of the pad of his finger tip then the fingernail, almost like stroking it instead of plucking it, but I also know that he has a bag full of tricks that doesn’t limit him. One other thing I think that is worth mentioning about Leo’s sound is the way he uses his thumb. He holds it parallel to the strings and I have admit after trying it for awhile it’s very effective as far adding power to the sound when you need it and also it gives you alot more control. The thing I want to mention is that the Taylor LKSM 12-string has scalloped bracing on the top and this really loosens the instrument up. To me scalloped bracing makes the guitar more responsive and also gives it a different tone, not as tight. Again, and this is just my goofy opinion, but I think that this combined with the low tunings he uses adds to the Kottke sound. I think that on his first Taylor (a 355 12 string) he scalloped the braces himself in the instrument because at that time and still, all of the Taylor 12 strings have non scalloped bracing (except for the LKSM 12 string).Busted Bicycle

I've got a cassette of leo kottke when he played on austin city limits around 89' I think, the one that starts with the available space/june bug medley. Leo uses two guitars in this show. One is his LKSM12 taylor and the other is the one I'm wondering about. I'm wondering what kind of leo uses: strings, pickup, preamp, amp, board? Does leo have the action changed from the factory settings? When he picks is he using his fingernails? When I try picking with my fingernails they usually grab too much of the string making too much sound. I had a taylor 410kce and have played for several years and i can play several kottke tunes all the way through, but I still can't get his sound.?aaron runkle

Has anyone found a good source for tabs of Peter Lang songs? There are two tunes on the Olga site, both very well done, and I think there are a couple in a book produced by John Stropes some yaers ago, but the book is unavailable.
Any other sources?BOB MAHFOOD

To Join,
Some of the requirements seem a little rigid to me, but for two of the selections of the questionnaire I have these answers to offer
I have Leo Kottke "stuff" to give you? (constitutes immediate membership approval)
I have one thing to say to this: Home and Away on DVD
If necessary, are you willing to become the opposite #@&
I have converted Coke machine that will do this, all you is insert $1.25 in quarters and the appropriate body parts, then pick the selection that reads “Really Ugly Woman”
Let me know if I am getting any closer to becoming an official “Tab Pig”
P.S.

It's been two months since I first came across this site. I've been so inspired by all the great transcriptions that I have been playing nothing but kottke music ever since. I'm an amateur Luthier also and have built myself a twelve string based on the LKSM. It's complete, I'm just waiting for the laquer to harden before the final sanding buffing and setting up.
I just want to give a huge thank you to you guys. I'm pretty useless at figuring out music for myself so I appreciate the effort it takes.

Yeah, we keep hearing about this Joe Carpenter guy that is tearing up the strings on his CD "When Pigs Fly..." ( well, we have to agree/like his CD title anyway). Too bad he doesn't have a nice snappy name though. Must be a real putz.
But in the meantime, we've got some Phil HeyWood tunes on the site as well. Have you checked those out yet?
Plus, we going to revolutionize the industry with out patent pending "secret sauce" for repairing guitar dings. Look for it on this site soon. It's guaranteed not to work!

Has anyone ever seen a tab for "Buckaroo" or "Embryonic Journey"? I mean the Kottke versions. I know Buckaroo isn't tchnically difficult, but I find difficulty getting it to sound like Leo's right hand fingering. And his version of Embryonic Journey is a neat twist on an old song, but played fast enough in some places to make it difficult to learn from a phonograph album.Bob Mahfood

HA! you actually want %10 of my salary? You guys must be crazy. I dont have my own place yet, and my car is a POS... how about you guys pay %10 of my student loans instead? :D
So standard tuning, then? I'll get right at it. Maybe I'll do my part and submit some tab to this site one day. Or not and continue to be a mooch. :)

EGADS 2....you're right, we *do* show it as DADGAD! What bonehead put that up there? Well, never mind.
However, page 32,561,089 of the "TabPig Manual" addresses just this type of situation. I'll quote from it for you:
"When confronted with an error on the Pig site...and said error is revealed by a non-pig person, the procedure is as follows:
"Shoot The Messenger."
(we learned this from our corporate life)
So, sorry Lord B...you're now SOL for getting any tabs in the future. In addition, you'll need to start kicking back 10% to us of your salary, your house, your car, and your girlfriend. Send us a picture of her first though (10% of nothing....is nothing).

Well, we found (through trial & error, mind you) that it helps if you don't have a face like a horse....or take the Lord's name in vain.
<I decided that I should actually learn how to be "good" at playing.
Then what are you doing here?
<Funny how that works. ;)
Not really...we've seen your picture on your website (badda-bing!).
<Anyways, I know it's in DADGAD tuning, but any other pointers would be appreciated-

Matthew,
As Robert said, we don't post any commercial tabs....and "Crow River Waltz" (transcribed by mark Hanson) is available...so go ahead and grab it.
That being said, it's a real easy tune. It's mostly just a decending G scale, with the guitar in Open G (but down a step or two). Not that hard to figure out from there actually. But again, Hanson's tab is straight-on if you want more help/info.

Hello Matthew Moore
You will not find the song "Crow River Waltz" in tab on the internet, because we all have a unwritten agreement not to tab Leo's music if it can be purchased.
Here's the best place to get the book that contains the song your looking for:
http://www.elderly.com/books/items/199-3.htm
It also comes with a 90-minute cassette to help you learn the piece.
The book also contains tab to the following tunes:
"Busted Bicycle," "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring," "Crow River Waltz," " Little Beaver," and "Theme From the Rick & Bob Report."
And all for only $18.95!
Good Luck,

i am a practicing classical guitar player who has become devoted to learning kottke's music.
i have been desperately searching the internet for a tabbed transcription of the "Crow River Waltz".
i cant seem to find it anywhere.

"Busted Bicycle" asks;
<What does it take to become a Tab Pig?
Well, first you gotta suck up pretty good, kind of like Lee did below. Our ego's need constant feeding....well, some of us do. Okay, okay, you got me; I do.
<The standards can no longer be to tab one of Leo songs because as far as I can see all the good ones have been done....
Well, so far so good....at least you can read (which is more than I can say for some of the Pigs).
<So that leaves other methods of my own invention.
1. A picture of Angelina Jolie and me.
Only if she's naked.....and your not. And if you know her that well, have her be the "Hot Tub Babe" at the annual & upcoming "Weekend At Bernie's". This would constitute immediate membership approval......For her.
<Since women seem to play a major role in your lives I see this as the most decisive method to use.
You pegged that one.
<2. To get Leo to ask you to let me join this “exclusive circle of idiots” which would probably result in Leo filing a restraining order against me, thereby proving my intense loyalty and devotion to him as an artist.
Plus, he would strongly warn you against it.
<3. Fill out your TAB Pig Membership Application (this one is the hardest). Although this this is not an original idea, I would probably be the first person moronic enough to do it.
No, only if you actually mailed it.
<4. To give you lots of money (this one is the easiest). Although I am philosophically oppose to such cheap tactics I also know it really works.
However that does indeed constitute immediate membership, as we all would like to retire early. But, there is one glaring problem; You knew how to spell "philosophically", which is a back mark in the PigPen. Well, I *think* you spelled it right...I could be wrong on that one.
<Let me know if any of these ideas spark an interest in considering me a Tab Pig.
Think; EARLY RETIREMENT FOR ALL OF THE TABPIGS. Mind you, that's just a hint for your next course of action. Far be it from me to actually *suggest* that "money talks...bull#@&* walks". :-)
<P.S. I’m really a devoted guitar player if that counts.
Then raising the money shouldn't be much of an effort for you, as you appear to be pretty resourcefull. We hear that the Piggly-Wiggly grocery stores are pretty easy targets after midnight (we don't know this to be a fact, it's just what we *hear* from a certain Pig who shall remain nameless).
<Busted Bicycle
We'd have to know your real name and have a photo to boot (don't forget to include the naked picture of Angelina Jolie though...we need more pics for our "Gallery" section), as Pigs can't name themselves. It's in the rules 9if we had any).

<Why doesn't this site work anymore, could some please send my the tab for Vaseline Machine and if you could Morning Is A Long Way Home.
Hello? Anyone there? Damien, as stated in this guestbook many times, we do not post any Kottke tabs that are already commercially published and for sale by him. of course the site still works, but you have to read it first. When you pull up the info for "VMG", it clearly states it was tabbed by Stropes. We even provide an hyperlink right there to make it easy for you. This is part of the deal that we have with him.
The bottomline is, you're gonna have to pay Stropes if you want this tab. But, another option is to just figure it out, as it's really not a hard tune. We provided the tuning for you in the tabs.
Go take a look and try again.
Of course, the same thing holds true for *MITLWH*. Stropes again, as a commercial tab by Kottke.

Piggers:
I wanted to convey my condolences to the many of you that were such Chet Atkins appreciators. As usual, I was a little late jumping on the Chet Train, but once I "heard" him, I understood. I purchased many of his works and in a short period of time, I feel I came to know of a great man/artist/musician. His music and wit made you laugh, yet he could be sentimental enough at times, to move you down stirring paths.
Goodnight Chet....:-)

Man, is it ever a good thing that you included that first sentence, otherwise we would have barred you from the site for life. You DARE to question the TabPigs???? May your sow sell all of your guitars for pennies on the dollar
(all will be forgiven if she sells them to a TabPig of course).
Seriously though Glen; Are you talking about JUST measure 12...or each time it repeats throughout the tune?
Also, I'm wondering if it's that F# on the 6th string that is bothering you? If so, count on that note being there. Leo frets that with his LH thumb.
If this isn't what your referring to, drop me a note and fill me in on what you think is correct (email address below).
Of course, we'll still blow you off, but at least it will *look* like we're being nice and accommodating to everyone else. This is also where I state "Gee wiz, we LOVE to get comments and corrections from other people on our tab". :-)

I was wondering if there were plans on finishing some of the tab that is "unfinished," like Chamber of Commerce, and "too fast" (I cant play all of what you have of "too fast" yet, but it would be nice to have all of it!) and some others. I'm working on taking some of my playing up a notch or two, I can play a lot of Leo's open-tuning stuff, and now I'm working on some of his standard tuning stuff, which I feel is a bit harder. Thanks a lot guys, I'm trying patiently to wait for the site update! Keep it up!

No worries...by that definition, we're all cannibals in the Pen.
<I offer two questions for your kind consideration:
Oops...there's nothing "kind" in our consideration, but go ahead....
<1. Machine 3 (VMG) by John Stropes in Eight Songs does not include the "Taps" intro from 6 & 12 String. Do you guys have it?
Yeah, if Kottke didn't play it on the day Stropes shot his video, it doesn't get tabbed. Personally, I don't play the Taps part, but Rooter does.
Getting it tabbed from Rooter is the fun part. You see, Rooter's tab will bring you back to when you first started to read....all those "See Spot run..." books. Be prepared for tab that reads like this:
"Hit the skinny string first open, then the second-to-the-fattest string next..at the 4the fret. Then hit the 3rd skinnest string next at the 5th fret..." and so on.
<2. Same book, Blue Dot. In Leo's introduction to the song, he states "don't peck at the string, lean on it - like nudging someone off a bus". What does he mean?
What he means is, get the tips of your finger pads no more that 79 degrees to the string (but no less that 76 degrees), and push (aka; "nudge") the notes from one to the other. Can't make it any clearer than that for you.
That's right, we have no freakin' clue what he means.
<And why a bus?
Probably 'cause they don't go as fast as cars, thus the guy you nudge off will only get a little broken up...versus alot.
Seriously though; Why not a bus?
Yep...we still have no clue.

This is a great opportunity to say thanks to the “Tab Pigs” for their contribution to the archiving and learning of Leo Kottke’s music. It is one thing to listen to his music... but to be able to play it is a whole new level of experience. Just listening to to Leo’s music is like going to a restaurant and having to eat the menu. Without the efforts of the “Tab Pigs” I would never be able to enjoy Leo's music and my guitars like I have. I realize how difficult it is to tab some of his work and then to build such a great site with PDF files to share free of charge! Thank You to The 10 Power!Robert

Brendan;
Glad you like the updated site....there's more to come.
As for the tab programs, almost all of them started out in either Tabledit or Guitar-Pro. Those in turn (and some of the old ASCII tabs) were converted into PDF files....which gives a nice clean look to them.
Ft. Wayne, eh? We'd have to be pretty #@&* desperate to go to Ft. Wayne for a Kottke show. :-)
Seriously though, the closest Pigs would be Chicago, Columbus and Decatur, but many of them are planning a show in Chicago area in April. Enjoy it anyway!

Mark, Jackson;
Thanks for the new site comments. Glad to hear that the new tabs are "hitting the spot" as well.
BTW, here's a hint for all of you;
When you open up a tab thats in PDF, move your cursor over the disclaimer at the top of the tab page. But, turn your volume up before you do....
Again, thanks for the comments. Keep pickin'.

Egads, someone who wants to hear a pig (or pigs) play?? Jeeze, do you like going to the dentist too?
But to answer your question, here's the latest tour schedule:
Rooter:
Madison Square Garden...3/12/01
London Philharmonic.....3/13/01
The Sydney Opera House..3/14/01
Bubba's BarBQue.........3/15/01
Oh, and I almost forgot; Coach & BS open the sled dog races in Possum Holler MN next week with a half hour gig on the stage next to the Port-A-Cans (that's the hot gig of the group).
Seriously though, Rooter plays out in Decatur IL pretty often, and I play in the Nashville area once or twice a week. If anyone is in the Nashville area, drop by the Gibson Showcase at OpryMills on 3/17/01 from noon thru 2:00pm at the Front Stage. I'll let you buy me a beer. <s>
Rev. Billy plays out in Wales, with his next gig shared with Martin Simpson at a guitar workshop....which I think is in April.

I love leo's music(and steel string guitar music in general)so much that I started making guitars about four years ago. I didn't do it for money or fame, I did it for myself so that I could have great guitars too! It has been a long road but this past month my best attempt came to completion. It will be awhile before I can afford a taylor leo kottke model so I figured that I would just build one. I didn't want a copy but a 12-string of my own with very low action that was made to take medium strings and crazy picking!! It is a real hot guitar and it plays as good if not better than a Taylor! I cherish your site for quite a few reasons but most of all because I am throughly useless when it come to transcription. Thanks again!

Bill Anderson asks;
<Are you surprised to see the how different the published version of a song is from your tabs?
No need to troll Bill. If you're talking about old OLGA tabs...no, not for the majority of them. Regarding Pig tabs though, APII was close, which I consider a miracle. Many others were *very* close. For example "Across The Street" which was tabbed by HeySuz. Only a couple different notes or positions of same notes. It's funny; sometimes we make the tune harder than it is (note position-wise). "Snorkel" was a good example of this on Part 3. At the same time, Kottke changed the tune very slightly from his previous live version to the recorded one.
All that being said, we do have 1 or 2 tabs that are completely wrong (they were posted by a guy that was very hard-headed). They'll be gone or corrected on the new site.

Hey Chris!
How'd you like the tabs I sent you? Got 'em all down pat now, right?
It was good to see you again, but I gotta tell you, "balls" had nothing to do with it that year. It's called being "ignorant".....I had no idea it was a "Travis venue". I'll never forget the look on the guy's face next to me when I turned to him and commented on the fact that 5 picker's in a row had played nothing but Merle Travis tunes. It was one of those "you're not from around here, are ya?" kind of looks. Then when I was done playing, he asked me "just what do you call that kind of music?".
Anyway folks, besides being a Kottke fan, Chris Wolf ("seawolf") is a great ragtime picker and a real nice guy. If you get the chance to hear him play, don't pass it up.
Thanks for stopping in Chris....check back for the upcoming site update...and I'll see you next year at the contest.

Aaron-
Regarding your question and post below on the tune on ACL, it's called "Jesus Maria" and is from the That's What album. It was written by Carla Bley and, if memory serves, arranged for guitar by Tim Sparks. I believe an update of the tab has been or is in the process of being completed. Drop us a line and somebody will send it to you. On the classical piece, I don't know. It's definitelly not from the Lute Suite #1 in Em by Bach. Souns like Fernando Sor to me, but that's a real uneducated guess.

I am stumped on two of leo's tunes. I can't figure out the names of them. Maybe you could help. I have one of his austin city limits shows, the show where leo starts with june bug\available space medley, and he plays a song that starts like so:
standard pitch ^ = hammeron
--------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------
-0^2^4-----------0--------------7------
--------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------
If you would happen to know the name of this song i would love to know what it is, i can't find it anywhere. i know its just a short piece of it, but if you have the video of this show you'll know which one i'm talking about.
The second song or piece that i'm trying to figure out is one i heard at the beginning of his home and away video, you have to watch the video at the very beginning to know this one. Its the very first song or piece of a song that you hear when you put the video in. Its one he's playing in a guitar store and from what i can make of it he's playing this:
/ = slide
-------7---7/3------3---3----------5----5/2------2-----2-------------------------------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------7---7/4------4---4----------5----5/2------2-----2-------------------------------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Its sounds to be classical and i'm pretty certain its not bourree. Any output on these two would be appreciated.
thanks

I've been a Kottke fan since I first found an album (low-tech? yes) of his at a flea market more than 25 years ago. I don't even recall the album name now, but it had "Eight Miles High". Awesome pickin'.
I lost it and more during lifestyle changes in the interim. Still have my guitar, tho.
Been trying to get my calluses back, as well as my speed and clarity...not impossible, but I kick myself.
Kottke came to mind about a week ago. I was bragging about him to my co-workers. Thought I'd check the 'Net for recent info and ended up here.
Haven't checked out the TABs yet, just wanted to say how much I appreciate finding y'all. I'll be around ;)

Norman,
(btw, like your email address :-)
Yeah, more tabs are coming (lot's) but we're major procrastanators. As for tab to "Easter", no, we have not posted it to the site...and will not. The reason is that this tab was a commercial venture involving Kottke (check Stropes
website for "20th Century Masters....").
We won't take money out of his pocket.
As stated in previous guestbook replies, Kottke has told us that he doesn't mind the tabs, as long as no one is making money off them. We have no problem with that, as this is not "life & death" stuff to us. Hell, we're just friggin' Pigs!
Anyway, in case you have not figured it out yet, the tune is in Open G...and the harmonic bends that you hear are behind the nut on the b string(s).
Hope this helps.....
Regards,
"Bernie"

Yeah, we know the site is in dire need of updating. We've got tons of tabs to post, errors corrected, etc... Unfortunately, none of the "PC geek" type pigs have a ton of time. It's getting close though.
#@&*%!wood (fyi, this site interpets this tune name as a swear word, thus the auto-censorship on the tune title) is one of the newer ones, and I know it's been sent to you already. Hope you enjoy the tab on that one, as about 6 pigs worked together on that one (ouch!).
As for "Parade", hate to say that vocal tunes fall way down to the bottom of the list when decisions are made on what tune is going to be tabbed next. As we all know, the only thing worse than a fingerpickin' pig is a singing pig, so I doubt you'll see this one tabbed soon. If anything, the PigPen seems to get more requests for "The Room At The Top Of The Stairs" (TRATTOTS) than any other vocal, so it's a good bet that would be done as the first vocal.
Thanks to all of you for your support.....and we'll try to keep the site updated more in the future (hmmmm........whats this "we" #@&*?!). If anyone is looking for a specific tab that is not currently listed on the site, drop me a mail......good chance we just have not posted it yet (by the way, "Too Fast" is in progress).
Keep pickin'.....

Hello!
Our webmaster hasn't had time to update the site for a while now, but a variety of new tabs are in the works or completed.
New tabs include: #@&*%!wood, Little Treasure, Retrograde, Wheels, The Spanish Entomologist, Julie's House and The Quiet Man. Tabs in progress include Blimp and Chamber of Commerce. (I'm sure I have forgotten some.)
If you are looking for a specific Leo tab e-mail us! (We still haven't done "Room at the Top" but it's moving up the list . :-) Most of our work now is in "Guitar Pro" format, which is an excellent transcription software. Eventually, we'll have our work in PDF format that can be read or printed with Adobe Acrobat.
See ya!

Hey Mike - I believe "Tell me mama" (at least the one on "Circle round the Sun")is the same melody as the first part of "Stealing" on Mudlark. It's in standard tuning (on Circle, it sounds like a 12-string tuned down several steps). The tab to Stealing is available here on the Pigs site.... enjoy!Tom Kearney

First heard Leo in the 70's playing "Louise". His music has introduced me to Leon Redbone, John Fahey, Peter Lang, Cal Hand, and a host of other musicians that I otherwise would never have had the opportunity to listen to. Whether he is as good as he use to be is a mute point. Without him, a large hole would exist in the musical background and education of all of us that have followed him and enjoyed his work.David Bernard

What a great site! I enjoy figuring out Leo's stuff when I have the proper tuning. The tabs are great, but I like the challange of working things out. If anyone has the tuning for Tell Me Mama, I would appreciate it. It haunts me after all these years (25). Also, thanks to LeeStLoo for his info.mike kerr

Everyone,
I know everyone has been anxious for us to update this site and I wanted to post a note saying that we are indeed working towards an update. It already has become a huge undertaking. We have a lot of new TABs, old TABs that have been fixed, we're completing the tunings database, correcting some mistakes, adding new PICs, adding new members, and a whole lot more. New format, new design, it hopes to be worth waiting for. If anyone has anything to contribute to the site please email me and we'll include it if we can.
The annual Pig summit will be held in a few weeks where we will contemplate the strategy of this undertaking.....(yeah, right! We're gonna drink beer in a hot tub, and play a lot of guitar!) So I would expect the update to be completed sometime in August.

Met Bruce H at a Kottke show the other day after corresponding via the net a bit, and he pointed me this direction. So here I am. Hint from seeing Leo play live two days in a row: His new CD should have a lot of good stuff for swine such as we to figure out.
I'm looking to start playing again, have strayed from the fretboards for quite a spell. Oh, saw a question here from someone asking about the LKSM 12 string model...definitely dip into the grocery budget to latch onto one. Hell, I put that and a LKSM 6 (specially made BEFORE Taylor was selling them officially...long story) on credit cards a long time ago because I didn't have the cash. And I don't mind paying the #@&*ed banks the interest on those purchases, because they play like a dream. But I digress...

Just want to say....great site. If I played guitar, I would probably live here. But when you call a woman a "pig", it carries a whole different connotation, doesn't it?
Anyway, to be a fly on the wall when you all get together, must be an incredibly cookin'time.
Nice to see the gallery of "handsome" (what??)faces to some of the names I've seen floating around.

I found out about Leo about six months ago and have become completely hooked. I saw him play in Baltimore on May 12 and was blown away by how clean he played. I was kind of distraught though, because the show has caused me to rethink how much I really need food in order to get a LKSM 12. If anybody has anything good or bad to say about this guitar I'd like to hear from you.KELLY B.

I wanted to thank you as well for your efforts with Leo's music, and the great forum in which you provide it. I have been a Pig without knowing it for pretty much all my (semi) adult life. My guitar playing was forever changed after seeing Leo on the Midnight Special in the early 70's - after which I searched far and wide until I found 6 &12 String Guitar. My own playing was changed forever. I have had the pleasure of seeing Leo several times, the last of which was in Davis, California when his 12 string gave up the ghost (electrically, anyway) and he was forced to play the entire gig on his six. He said that he was both pleased and challenged, and the audience did not mind a bit. Thanks again for your site, and giving me a place to belong. Sign me...

Well, maybe my comments were somewhat harsh - but the chorus part of Times Twelve is just wrong and that is the main part of the tune. The way Hanson has it is okay - you can play it and it sounds good, but he is missing bass notes and an important slur (hard to describe here). But I agree with you that it is worth it to have the book - I'm just saying I expected it to be more exact being an official transcription with "input from Leo" as he states in the notes.Fred

Monday, February 01, 1999 at 06:56:19 (PST)
I just got the same book (mainly for "William Powell"). The accuracy of WP seems great. The only problem I have is the length of the transcription. I wish that repeating sections could be "factored out". This would make the tabs seem much less intimidating (and allow more songs in each book <grin>). I prefer the "some assembly required" tabs (like the PIGS produce!) - it helps to think in terms of "I've got to learn 5 sections, only 2 of which are hard...." rather than stare at 20 pages of redundant tab....
I suppose that "the pros" would say that tabbing each note allows for accuratly annotating all the variations in the repeating sections, but again I would prefer a list of "variation snippets" at the end of the song.
But all in all, I think it's probably worth 20 bucks to learn "William Powell".Tom Kearney

I just got a Leo book by Mark Hanson with Times Twelve in it and was somewhat disappointed. I bought it for Times Twelve but while he seems to have most of the basics of the tune there, he's missing a lot of nuances and some notes are just plain wrong. While this is no big shakes, I just thought I'd get a better product from a professional publishing house. Oh well...Fred

Freddy,
In regards to your 12/17/98 post re tabs on this site, and how
do we get away with it:
1. We're Pigs!
Seriously though:
2. A number of us have specifically asked Kottke what his
opinion was of his tunes tabbed and on the net. He said "no
problem.......it's great for the guitar". I can tell you that if
he did have a problem with it, we wouldn't do it. Let's face
it, many of these tabs are not "dead-on" (some are tho).
But they can get you pointed in the right direction. I
know for a fact that anytime Stropes (or any other commercial
Kottke tab) comes out with new tab......even Pigs buy it!
It's a win-win situation for him.
3. We do not post any Kottke tabs available commercially,
as those are clearly business ventures. Even if we tabbed
it out before Stropes (or Hanson) published their tab of
a tune, we will take it off the site. For example, if you
click on the tab for "Busted Bicycle", you will get a
notice advising this tab is available from Accent on
Music (Mark Hanson)....along with an icon link.
Well, that's enough babbling from me today.......Bernie

Re your mail below on string gauges for the LKSM (or any 12
for that matter); The best bet is to combine 2 medium gauge
6 string sets (.13 thru .56).......and then add in the 2-3 missing strings
with singles. Highest I'll tune is C#, but mostly keep it in C. I've experimented with heavy guages...down to .15 thru .61, tuned down
to A or A#.......but the response was not there. 2 full steps seems to
work best for me. Hope this helps! As for the music store guys, most
of them are rocker's or folkie's, so it's kinda unkown territory to them.
And no....you never did thank me for the tabs!!!!!!! You are now
cut-off from downloading tabs from this site....and the secret pig

For all you guys playing the LKSM-12: how the heck do you get heavy enough gauge strings (it is designed for that, isn't it) from the run of the mill retailer?. I still go into stores asking for mediums for my 12 (Taylor 555) and they say things like, " oh, don't do that", etc. There's still a generation of retailers telling people that 12 strings are supposed to sound like harpsichords.Doug Halsey
