It makes the velocity and attack easier to achieve. I also recommend this approach for Busted Bicycle. If nothing else it takes me out of my four finger rut. I would suggest you also try fingerpicks. I'll make right hand fingering indications that I think keep a regular momentum going(which includes picking out a note here and there on the first and second strings with the thumb).
