Also known as a fretboard, this is the top surface of an instrument neck which contains the frets, against which the strings are pressed to form different notes.

- Frets

The thin metal wires that are inserted into the fingerboard at right angles. When a string is pressed against it, the fret shortens the length of the vibrating string. The shorter the length, the faster the vibration and the higher the note.
