A Tradition of Craftsmanship

Jim Chelsvig builds his guitars in the tradition of renowned luthier Bozo Podunavac (pronounced bo-zho pah-duh-nah-vitz). Bozo came to the United States from his native Yugoslavia in 1959. He had received five years of training in the repair and construction of stringed instruments in his home country.
After passing all state exams -- one of which included the building of a cello -- he became qualified to open his own business. Instead, he chose to come to the United States and settle in Chicago.

After he emigrated to the U.S., Bozo worked for several music companies doing instrument repair. In 1965, he opened his own shop and began experimenting with guitar design.
