About Jim Chelsvig (continued)

By chance I find an ad in Acoustic Guitar for a correspondence course in luthiery so I send a $1 for a catalog. (Thanks Acoustic Guitar!) The catalog arrives and the first words I read are, "Drew Johnston received his luthiery training from Master Bozo Podunavac..." At last, the Holy Grail!

I didn't get to work with the Master himself but I couldn't think of a better alternative. Drew was a kind and patient teacher, who tolerated two or three e-mails per week with detailed questions of the "How do I..?" and the "Why didn't this work?" variety. He said that building a cutaway was too difficult for a first instrument so I immediately started a second one. And a 12-string no less!

Drew followed in suit and provided me with additional instructions for building a Bozo-style cutaway. (Thanks Drew!) I later taught myself to build a Venetian cutaway.

Fingerstylist Larry Pattis heard that I was building in Bozo's style and we exchanged a few e-mails discussing various facets of the building process. He visited Chicago on family business and we arranged to meet so he could sample my work. Larry was pleased with the sound of my guitars, if not the novice workmanship, and wrote a very flattering review on a newsgroup. (Thanks Larry!)
